After a long day of being on-the-go it can often be difficult to start the process of unwinding. Taking a long shower, or soaking with a bath bomb, and then changing into your comfy clothes are a start, but then you walk into your bedroom and look at your unmade bed and suddenly the stress of the day comes crawling back. So why not give your future self the gift of a stress-free evening by making your bed in the morning before you start your day?

Make Your Day by Making Your Bed

According to the well-known commencement speech by U.S. Navy Adm. William H. McCraven, making your bed is a great way to kickstart a string of personal and professional accomplishments. So, why not take it a step further by making your bed as luxurious and comfortable as possible? We’ve spent nearly 80 years helping luxury hotels and resorts deliver a truly 5-star experience, and we can help you achieve the same elevated experience at home. Here’s everything you’ll need to bring your bed to the next level of luxury:

Mattress pad

It may be surprising to learn, but a lot of luxury hotels use mattress pads—not only do they add comfort, but they can protect your actual mattress from spills and stains, helping your investment last longer.

Fitted Sheet

Fitted sheets are the base of any well-made bed, but did you know that most hotels don’t use them? They often use a second flat sheet that is fully tucked in under the mattress, which makes it easier for housekeeping to quickly make beds. Since we aren’t changing our sheets once a day, Our fitted sheets feature a foot-of-bed notification for ease of application. To make folding and storage easier, we only use elastic in the corners where it’s needed.

Flat Sheet

Flat sheets are used in most luxury hotel beds, but not everyone uses them. It’s your bed, and your comfort, so it’s ultimately up to you. But if you use a flat sheet, you should pick one that provides you the luxury and experience that meets your specific needs. Curious about how to pick out the perfect sheets? Learn what you should look for in new sheets, and why thread count is overrated.

Duvet

The perfect luxury bed is plush and inviting, and a duvet is the best way to accomplish this. A duvet has two parts, the insert and the cover. Some people use just the duvet insert without the cover, but it’s rare to use the duvet cover by itself. We recommend using a duvet cover, because while most inserts are machine washable, it’s much easier to wash just the cover.

Shams

A sham is a decorative pillow case, and it’s not really meant to be slept on. To recreate the high-end luxury look, you’ll want at least two pillows in shams at the head of your bed, leaning against the wall or headboard. Many hotels choose a firmer pillow for the back row, so they keep their form and support the front row.

Pillows

Lean at least two more pillows against your shams. Luxury hotels often have at least 4 pillows on the bed, but you can determine if you want more or less. Hotels often place softer pillows up front. Your bed should look comfy, but not crowded.

Throws

Now it’s time to consider the finishing touches. Your bed should look amazing already, but just imagine how much better it will look with a decorative throw, folded in half and draped over the foot of the bed. The perfect way to add a pop of color, a seasonal touch, or quick access to some added warmth.

Start Your Day Off Right

Sure, it might seem like a lot to do first thing in the morning, but trust us, after you walk into your room after a long day, and you see your bed already made, luxurious and inviting, you’ll never think twice about making your bed first thing in the morning. There is nothing better for your mental health than starting your day and ending your day on a positive note.
