Layered Bedding 101: How to Layer Bedding Like a Pro
Ever wondered how to make your bed look as lavish and luxurious as a hotel's? It's an understated yet trending trick of the trade, one we call layered bedding. Sheets, pillows and duvet sets are obvious fundamentals to any bed but building upon these elements with other layers will only increase the coziness and aesthetic appeal of your space. Below we present you all the steps on how to layer bedding like a pro, equipped with all the essentials supplemented with chunky throws, bed blankets, mattress toppers and more.
Step 1: Build a Fluffy Base with a Mattress Topper & Duvet Insert
First things first, it's the inside that counts. Investing in premium mattress toppers and duvet inserts will ensure your bed is as comfortable as it is polished and inviting. Start here before moving into the more decorative layers. For fluffy, cloud-like comfort we recommend our Down Featherbed & Down Duvet Insert, which are premium down products certified under Responsible Down Standard (RDS), ensuring they're responsibly sourced. Down provides cushiony support that molds to your body, which is ideal when searching for a mattress topper, giving one the loftiness, comfort and support of sleeping on a cloud. The same can be said for your duvet insert, as the lofty weightlessness of down will make you feel as if you're curling up in a cloud night after night. If you have an allergy to down or prefer down alternative products, our Plush Mattress Pad is another great choice in mattress toppers. This provides an extra-plush layer of comfort and support without the use of down. Our Midweight Down Alternative Duvet Insert and All Seasons Down Alternative Duvet Insert are also great hypoallergenic, down alternative duvet insert options as well.
Step 2: Choose a Duvet Set as a Starting Point for your Color Scheme
We suggest working backwards and choosing a duvet set first, so that every other piece compliments this focal point in your layered bedding assortment. In this case, our Percale Duvet Set in White was the centerpiece that tied this look together. Crisp, clean and cool Percale is made with 100% Supima® cotton, which creates a tightly woven, soft & strong fabric that is perfect for a duvet set. White is an easy choice as it gives you plenty of room to play with different patterns, colors and textures when adding your other layers.
Step 3: Choose High Quality Sheets that Match your Duvet Set
Sheets are probably the most important part of all layered bedding products because they come in contact with your skin the most. Because of this, the fabric you choose is incredibly important (more about this here). The goal is to choose a fabric that has the properties you desire (soft, smooth, cooling, etc.) Although this is crucial, don't forget about color and pattern and how they will mesh with your other layers, as well as the duvet set you choose. To match our Percale Duvet Set in White, we chose our Percale Sheet Set in Aurora Stripe. The soft, seafoam green stripes mesh well with the whites, grays, beiges and browns of the room and bring an airy, bohemian chic element to the bed. Although these bed sheets aren't technically the main feature in our layered bedding ensemble, they become almost essential to the look we end up achieving, complimenting the other layers and solidifying the overall style.
Step 4: Add a Bed Blanket for Extra Texture, Dimension, Color & Warmth
Adding an extra blanket to your bed brings more variety to your layers and can also be practical addition as well. Here we chose our All Seasons Cotton Blanket in Natural, which adds an entirely different colorway to our layered bedding as well as a different texture. This, in effect, brings more dimension to your layered bedding and offers an added value of warmth, which can be cherished on those cooler nights and taken off when no longer needed.
Step 5: Throw on The Throws
Don't be afraid of adding multiple throws to your bed, especially if you are trying to achieve the look of layered bedding. This only brings more dimension and texture while also presenting an opportunity to introduce more hues. For this layered bedding look, we used our Knit Throw in Beige in combination with our Cotton Knit Throw in Sesame. The two work together with varying shades of beige and have two different knitting styles that contrast yet complement each other. The Knit Throw is tuck stitched while the Cotton Knit Throw is a heathered knit, and these different patterns emanate added volume, creating cozy, lush & luxurious layers that you'll want to bury yourself in night after night.
